Riverside's older neighborhoods drain through cast iron and clay under mature street trees, and its newer tracts through plastic. The right fix for a clog depends on which, and a camera shows it.

Riverside is one of the oldest cities in the Inland Empire, and its drains show it. The Wood Streets, the area around Victoria Avenue and parts of downtown include homes built before World War II, and much of the rest of the city went up between the 1950s and the 1970s. Those homes typically drain through cast iron inside the house and a clay sewer lateral out to the street.
Both materials have known weak points. Cast iron scales up inside and eventually cracks, so the line narrows and catches everything. Clay laterals are laid in short sections, and the joints between them are where roots get in, especially in neighborhoods with mature street trees. Riverside's hard water adds mineral scale on top of grease in kitchen lines.
The east side is different. Orangecrest, Mission Grove and other newer tracts are mostly slab-on-grade with plastic drain lines, where clogs are usually grease, wipes and food waste rather than roots.

Call (951) 579-7318A motorized cable with a cutting head opens a clog and is the right first tool for most sink, tub and toilet lines. It punches through the blockage but does not clean the pipe walls, so a line coated with grease or scale clogs again.
High-pressure water scours the full diameter of the pipe, washing out grease, scale and fine roots. It is the better choice for a kitchen line that keeps clogging or a main line with heavy buildup. On old cast iron and clay, a camera look first confirms the pipe is sound enough to jet. See hydro jetting.
A camera run through the line shows roots, cracks, offset joints and sags, and records where they are. In older Riverside homes it is what separates a line that just needs clearing from one that needs repair.
Main lines are cleared through a cleanout, a capped pipe usually in the front yard near the house. Some older Riverside homes were built without one, and the line is then reached through a toilet opening or a roof vent, or a cleanout is added. The City of Riverside maintains the sewer mains in the street, and the lateral from the house to the main is generally the owner's to clear and repair. When roots or broken sections keep causing backups, see sewer line repair in Riverside.

Clearing cuts the roots inside the pipe but does not close the joint they came through. In an older Riverside clay lateral they grow back, often within a year. A camera shows whether lining or replacing the damaged section is the lasting fix.
Yes. The line can be reached by pulling a toilet or through a roof vent, and adding a cleanout makes future service faster and cheaper. The plumber can price it at the same visit.
The City of Riverside maintains the sewer mains in the street. The lateral from your house to the main is generally the owner's responsibility to clear and repair, and repairs need a City of Riverside permit.
Usually, when the pipe is sound. On old cast iron and clay, a camera inspection first shows whether the line is too cracked or thin to jet, in which case cable clearing and a repair are the safer path.
