What to Do Before Help Arrives

Knowing where your main shutoff is, before you need it, is the most useful five minutes you can spend.

The most useful thing you can do in a plumbing emergency happens before anyone arrives. Water damage is cumulative, and the minutes between noticing and shutting off frequently matter more than how fast a plumber can get to you.

1. Shut Off the Water

For a fixture, use the angle stop beneath it. For anything larger, use the main shutoff, usually near the front of the house, at the meter, or by the water heater. Find it now, before you need it.

2. For a Water Heater, Cut Fuel Too

Turn the gas control to off, or switch off the breaker on an electric unit, then shut the cold inlet valve at the top of the tank. Do not attempt to drain a hot tank.

3. If You Smell Gas, Leave First

4. For Sewage, Stop Using Water

Every flush and every drained sink adds to a backup that has nowhere to go. Keep people and pets away from contaminated areas and stop water use entirely until the line is cleared.
