One slow drain is a local clog. Several drains failing at the same time means the blockage is in the main sewer line that all of them share. Stop using water immediately, because everything you send down the drain has nowhere to go but back into the house.
Stop Using Water Right Now
This is the one plumbing situation where the most useful thing you can do is nothing. Every flush, every load of laundry, and every drained sink adds volume to a line that is already blocked, and that volume comes back up through the lowest opening in the house. That is usually a shower pan, a tub, or a floor drain, and frequently in a room nobody is watching.
Keep people and pets away from any area where wastewater has surfaced. Sewage is a genuine health hazard rather than just an unpleasant mess, and the cleanup is different from a clean water spill.
Why the Mainline Is the Prime Suspect
Every fixture in your home drains into a single main line that carries waste out to the municipal sewer. Branch lines serve individual fixtures and clog independently. When several fixtures fail together, the common factor is the line they share, and that points downstream to the mainline or the sewer lateral running under your yard.
The usual causes are tree roots entering at joints in older clay or cast iron lateral pipe, accumulated grease narrowing the line over years, a collapsed or offset section, a bellied run holding standing water where debris settles, and flushable wipes, which do not break down and are a leading cause of mainline blockages.
In the older neighborhoods of Riverside, Hemet, central Corona, and Diamond Bar, clay laterals and mature street trees are a common combination, which is why root intrusion is so frequently the answer there.
What a Plumber Will Do
The work starts with a camera inspection through a cleanout, and you should insist on watching the screen. A camera settles in twenty minutes what would otherwise be guesswork, and it is the difference between a few hundred dollars of clearing and several thousand dollars of replacement.
What the footage shows determines the fix. Roots get cut and the entry point addressed. Grease gets hydro jetted, which scours the pipe wall back to full diameter instead of punching a channel through. Cracks, offsets, and collapses need spot repair, lining, or replacement, and a transmitter in the camera head marks exactly where and how deep so the excavation is targeted.
After the work, the camera goes back in so you can confirm the line is actually clear rather than temporarily open.
What to Do Before Help Arrives
- Stop all water use in the house, including toilets and laundry
- Keep people and pets away from any area with standing wastewater
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a mainline blockage
- Find your outside sewer cleanout if you can, usually a capped pipe near the foundation
- Note which fixtures are affected and which are not, since that helps locate the blockage
- Take photos if there is damage, for insurance
