Murrieta's first tract neighborhoods are now more than 30 years old, the age when copper under a slab starts to pinhole. Electronic detection, reroute or direct repair, and a straight answer on when a repipe makes more sense.

Nearly every Murrieta home sits on a concrete slab, with copper water lines run under or within the concrete when the house was poured. That was standard construction through the 1990s and much of the 2000s, which covers most of the city. The earliest Murrieta tracts, in Alta Murrieta, California Oaks and around Copper Canyon from the late 1980s and early 1990s, are now old enough for those lines to fail.
Copper under a slab fails from the inside out. Hard water, fast flow through elbows and bends, and small flaws in the original installation all feed pinhole corrosion, and hot water lines usually go first. Movement adds to it: parts of southwest Riverside County have clay soil that swells and shrinks with the seasons, and Murrieta sits along the Elsinore fault zone, so pipes in and under a slab absorb years of small stresses.
Not every early leak is a slab leak. Some early-1990s Murrieta homes were plumbed with gray polybutylene supply pipe, which tends to fail at fittings in walls and attics rather than under the floor. A plumber can tell the two apart quickly, and the answer changes the fix.

Call (951) 579-7318A quick check: turn off every fixture and look at the water meter, usually in a box near the curb. If the small leak indicator is turning, water is going somewhere. Then close the cold supply valve on top of the water heater. If the indicator stops, the leak is most likely on the hot side. More detail is in what a warm spot on the floor means and why a water bill doubles.
Electronic leak detection locates the leak without tearing up the floor. Pressure testing isolates the hot and cold sides, acoustic equipment listens for the leak through the concrete, and thermal imaging traces a hot line under tile. A good locate narrows the leak to a small area, so if the slab does have to be opened, it is a small hole rather than a trench through the kitchen.
Detection typically runs $150 to $500 and is quoted before it starts. It is its own line item, so you can take the findings and compare repair quotes if you want to.
The leaking section is abandoned and a new line, usually PEX, is run through the walls or attic. Reroutes avoid concrete and flooring work and are frequently the least expensive option. They are simplest in single-story homes with attic access and are often possible in two-story Murrieta homes through closets and soffits.
The slab is opened at the located spot, the pipe is repaired, and the concrete is patched. This makes sense when the leak sits near an exterior wall, under the garage, or under flooring that is being replaced anyway, and the rest of the line is sound.
If this is the second or third leak, the copper is failing throughout, and repairing one spot at a time just waits for the next. A whole-home PEX repipe ends the cycle. See repiping in Murrieta and slab leak repair methods.
Insurance varies. Many California policies cover the cost of accessing the pipe and the resulting water damage but not the pipe repair itself. Take photos, report promptly, and ask your carrier. The plumber can document what was found and what was repaired.

Yes. Copper does not fail on a fixed schedule, and hard water speeds up the pinhole corrosion behind most slab leaks. Twenty to thirty years is a common window for the first one.
Often, but not always. A reroute avoids concrete and flooring work and is frequently cheaper, especially in a single-story home with attic access. Direct access can be better for a leak near an outside wall or under the garage.
Policies vary. Many cover access to the pipe and the resulting water damage but not the pipe repair itself, and whether the leak was sudden or gradual can matter. Document it and call your carrier.
If water is surfacing, close the main shutoff, which in most Murrieta tract homes is on an outside wall near the front hose bib, often beside the pressure regulator. If the leak looks like the hot side, closing the cold valve on top of the water heater can slow it. Then call (951) 579-7318.
