When copper under the slab starts leaking in one Temecula home, the homes built the same year are often close behind. A repipe moves the water lines out of the slab and into the attic and walls for good.

Most of Temecula went up in planned phases from the late 1980s through the 2000s, and nearly all of it sits on concrete slabs with copper supply lines run under the floor. Rancho California Water District and Eastern Municipal Water District both deliver hard water, and over decades that water and the high pressure behind a failing regulator wear pinholes into copper. Once the first slab leak appears in an early Paloma del Sol, Vail Ranch or Meadowview home, more usually follow, because every line in the slab is the same age and the same pipe.
Old Town and the original streets around it are the exception. Some of those homes still have galvanized steel lines, which do not usually burst but rust shut from the inside, so the first sign is weak pressure at every tap rather than a leak.

Call (951) 579-7318A single slab leak in a home that has never had one is usually repaired, either by opening the floor at the leak or by rerouting that one line through the walls. Both are priced after the leak is pinpointed, and the plumber quotes the options side by side.
The math changes with the second leak. Each slab repair costs real money, comes with flooring damage or a reroute, and does nothing about the rest of the copper under the floor. Two or three of them can approach the cost of a full repipe, which ends the problem for the whole house. If more than one line has failed, ask for a repipe price at the same visit so you can compare.
A partial repipe is also possible: rerouting the hot water lines only, for example, because hot copper tends to fail first. It costs less now, but the cold lines are the same age.
Most single-family repipes take two to five working days depending on the size of the home and the number of bathrooms. Two-story homes take longer because lines run between floors. You do not usually need to move out.
PEX is the usual choice in Temecula today. It does not pinhole the way copper does in hard water, it bends around framing with fewer fittings, and it costs less to install. It is rated for water temperatures far above what a Temecula attic reaches in August, and lines in the attic are covered by insulation.
Type L copper is the other option. It lasts a long time in softer water and some homeowners prefer it, but in hard water it can pinhole again over the decades, and it costs more. Either way, a water softener ahead of the new lines protects them, along with the water heater. See what hard water does to plumbing.

Whole-home repiping typically runs $4,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the size of the home, the number of bathrooms and fixtures, and whether it is one or two stories. You get one written price, including the permit, before work starts. See repiping prices.
Most single-family homes take two to five working days. Water is usually back on at the end of each workday, and the city inspection is scheduled before the walls are patched.
Yes. The City of Temecula requires a permit and an inspection for a repipe. The plumber pulls it and lists the fee in the quote.
Yes. PEX is rated for water temperatures well above what an attic reaches, and attic runs are covered by insulation. What PEX should not get is direct sunlight, which is not an issue inside an attic or wall.
Not always. One leak in a home that has never had one is usually repaired. A second leak, or pinholes on different lines, is the point where a repipe price is worth comparing against another repair.
